NCTA Looks for Next Wave in Cable Innovation with Call for 2008 Technical Papers

11/9/2007, WASHINGTON, D.C. – Building on nearly a half century of groundbreaking innovation, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) today issued its annual call for submissions to The 2008 NCTA Technical Papers™.

Entries selected for inclusion in the NCTA Technical Papers will capture some of cable’s most innovative technology strategies, and continue the tradition of recording these breakthrough engineering concepts. Highlights of accepted papers will be presented at The Cable Show’08, NCTA’s 57th Annual International Convention and Exposition, to be held May 18-20, 2008 in New Orleans.

2008 will mark the 49th year that NCTA has published the technical papers, which consistently provide a valuable reference for all cable engineering professionals. Authors selected for inclusion in the prestigious program will present summaries of their work during a special track of panels and events during The Cable Show ’08, the industry’s premier international convention.

“NCTA’s technical program has consistently drawn the participation of the top innovators in the cable industry and has introduced many significant advances in cable telecommunications, including early references to cable modem technology, the viability of HFC networks, and the use of satellites to transport content to cable headends. We look forward again this year to discovering new advances in cable’s technology evolution,” said William Check, NCTA Senior Vice President of Science and Technology.

Proposals for technical papers are due December 21, 2007. While any subject matter relevant to broadband cable and telecommunications engineers is eligible, topics of particular interest for 2008 are:

* Digital audio and video coding, conversion and processing
* Asset management and storage
* Wireless broadband data and voice architectures and protocols
* System-on-chip and other integrated silicon solutions applicable to the cable industry
* Optical platforms and solutions specific to services delivery in cable networks
* Techniques for scaling cable network bandwidth utilization and efficiency
* Application of Internet-based communications protocols in cable networks
* Other advanced broadband technology topics related to next generation cable network architecture.

Proposals will be reviewed and judged by a panel of top industry technologists, chaired by Dan Pike, Chief Technical Officer, GCI Cable, Inc. Judging will be based on the premise, reference value, content and intended audience of each paper. Multiple entries will be accepted but product pitches and previously published works cannot be considered. The papers will be available for purchase during The Cable Show ‘08.

“The NCTA technical program has always been a great platform for ground-breaking new ideas and innovative approaches. Throughout the years, the participants have altered the face of telecommunications in ways that have benefited the cable industry and consumers alike,” Pike said.

Prospective authors interested in preparing and presenting a technical paper at The Cable Show ’08 should submit a proposal using the online submission form available at www.nctatechnicalpapers.com no later than December 21, 2007.
