Harkin, Senate, Override Bush Block On Flood Control & Waterway Funding
November 8, 2007 -- Washington, D.C. - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today made the following statement after voting with the majority of his colleagues for the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). Today's action serves as the Bush Administration’s first veto override. President Bush struck WRDA down last week; the Senate approved the bill today by 79 to 14 votes.
“Today the Senate ensured that Iowa could improve its waterway and infrastructure needs so that our communities remain safe and our businesses continue to grow. We chose to support our farmers by providing lower cost and more energy efficient movement of their products. Republicans and Democrats proved today that if we keep working together we can overcome our country’s challenges and our president’s veto threats.”
