Discovery Memorializes Steve Irwin at Onsite Childcare Center with Kids Place and Crikey Cove
SILVER SPRING, Md., Nov. 7 – Discovery Communications today announced plans to open Discovery Kids Place and Crikey Cove, an onsite childcare facility at the company’s global headquarters in Summer 2008. The company will honor Steve Irwin in special ways throughout the center by celebrating his passion for protecting and preserving wildlife, and for his devotion to his family. Terri Irwin attended a ceremony today at the company’s global headquarters to dedicate the center in her husband’s memory.
The new facility will provide full-service care for more than 90 infants, toddlers and preschoolers of current Discovery employees. The children’s education at the childcare center will be shaped by Discovery’s commitment to science, exploration and education, all core to the company’s mission of helping people explore their world and satisfy their curiosity. Continuing Discovery’s commitment to living and working green, the childcare center will be eco-friendly in its design and operations.
“Discovery is committed to the success of our employees and we strive to provide a positive work environment to help them grow and achieve their personal and professional goals,” said Ms. Alpert Romm, senior executive vice president, human resources. “The new childcare center adds to our growing list of unique programs, including an onsite Wellness Center, fitness programs and flexible telework opportunities. Understanding the varied needs of our diverse employee base enables us to retain and attract top talent and makes Discovery one of the best places to work.”
The new childcare center will become the latest in the growing list of programs offered to Discovery employees. Nearly 10 years ago, Discovery launched its signature LifeWorks@Discovery Program to address the varied needs of a diverse workforce. Programs focus on family support, health and wellness, flexibility and the community. Lifeworks programs and services include an on-site Wellness Center serving as a primary care facility, financial services and legal assistance, fitness reimbursement, on site nutritional counseling, life coaching, flexible work schedules, emergency child and elder care, massage therapy, onsite dry cleaning, car wash, and adoption assistance to name a few.
The new facility will be operated by Bright Horizons, an industry leader in providing work site childcare.
