November 5, 2007 -- ESPN The Magazine announced today that ESPN anchor and reporter Kenny Mayne will expand his ESPN role by joining The Mag as the new voice of “Outtakes.” “Outtakes,” one of the most popular columns of the award winning magazine, premiered in The Magazine’s debut issue in 1998, and features comical and off-beat interviews with sports’ biggest names. The column runs in each issue of The Magazine.

For his first column, Mayne interviewed his “Outtakes” predecessor Dan Patrick.

Highlights:

KM: You know - you rarely had me on your radio show.

DP: I couldn’t compete with your humor. It’s like Leno never having comedians who are better than him. It was comedy envy on my part; that’s why I couldn’t have you on.

KM: As I understand it, I’m supposed to ask popular-culture questions now.

DP: It’s called pop culture, Kenny. Man, they’ve got their work cut out with you.

KM: Finally—how much did you get paid for this, so I know I’m not getting cheated?

DP: They paid me minimum wage, hourly, and I got subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine for all my friends. So, four—well, three—people got subscriptions.

“We are thrilled to have Kenny join The Magazine,” said Gary Hoenig, editor in chief, ESPN The Magazine and general manager, ESPN Publishing. “Kenny’s wit and humor are unparalleled, and we look forward to him sharing his unique voice with our readers.”

Mayne’s first “Outtakes” will be in the new issue of The Magazine on newsstands Wednesday, November 7, 2007.
