Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Kevin Costner Celebrate Uniform Launch Nov. 8

11/02/2007, ST. PETERSBURG -- Hollywood's Kevin Costner and his band Modern West will perform at Straub Park in downtown St. Petersburg on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. during the Tampa Bay Devil Rays celebration to launch the team's new name, colors, uniforms and logo. Admission is free.
Presenting sponsors for the event include Champs Sports, Bright House Networks and the St. Petersburg Times. Catch 47 will cover the launch live from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Costner and Modern West have been performing original rock and roll songs for more than two years. One of the film industry's most endearing and enduring stars, Costner has starred in nearly 50 feature films including three baseball movies: Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and For the Love of the Game.
The band will take the stage at Straub Park following a "fashion show" at 5:30 p.m. in which Rays players and coaches, Manager Joe Maddon, former players Wade Boggs and Fred McGriff will model the Rays new uniforms. Following the concert, there will be a fireworks show. The afternoon will kick off at 4 p.m. with activities for fans of all ages. The Rays Street Team and team mascot Raymond will also be part of the celebration.
The festivities will continue the following day, Friday, Nov. 9 at Gaslight Park in downtown Tampa. Beginning at 11:45 a.m., more than 15 Rays players and Joe Maddon will be on hand to sign autographs. The team will provide free hot dogs, sodas, water, peanuts and Cracker Jack. Rays radio broadcasters Dave Wills and Andy Freed will serve as emcees for the event and the team will give away t-shirts featuring the Rays new look to selected fans. The Rays Street Team and Raymond will also be part of the celebration. The Rays new merchandise will be available for sale at the team's Tampa Office located at 400 North Tampa Street, directly across from Gaslight Park.
That evening and on Saturday afternoon, fans can meet Rays players and purchase the new gear at numerous Champs Sports locations throughout the Tampa Bay area. Champs is the exclusive retail outlet for the launch.
The Rays will have a number of community stops on Friday as well. Rays players will visit the military personnel at MacDill Air Force Base on Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Rays Manager Joe Maddon and President Matt Silverman will present a new jersey to St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker in his office at 10:30 a.m. and will be joined later by Carl Crawford to present a jersey to Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio in her office at 1:45 p.m. Rays pitchers Gary Glover and Jason Hammel will visit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation's Kids Fishing Derby at the Renaissance Vinoy Marina at 12:30 p.m.
