Matt Stairs Agrees to Terms with Toronto Blue Jays

11/02/2007 -- The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have signed OF MATT STAIRS to a two-year contract worth $3.25 million (US).

MATT STAIRS, 39, appeared in 125 games with the Blue Jays last season, batting .289 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI. The 21 home runs represent his highest total since belting 21 in 2000 with Oakland, while his .549 slugging pct. was the 3rd highest total of his career. The 5'9", 215 lb. veteran has played for nine separate organizations covering a 15-year career.

He has appeared in 1,541 career games, posting a .267 average with 241 home runs. The St. John, New Brunswick native ranks second only to Larry Walker in career games played and career home runs by a Canadian born player. Stairs was the first Major League player from Canada to post back-to-back 25 home run seasons, accomplishing the feat in three consecutive seasons (1997-99) with Oakland.
