Tuesday, October 30, 2007, DETROIT -- Workers at MGM Grand Casino Hotel have ratified a new four-year labor agreement, with 53 percent of workers voting in favor of the agreement.

“Once again, good-paying union jobs go hand-in-hand with the growth and expansion of the Detroit gaming industry,” said UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles, who directs the union’s Technical, Office and Professional (TOP) Department. “Our members and their families will benefit from this new contract -- and customers at MGM will continue to enjoy the high standards of service our members set every day throughout the facility.”

The new contract follows the industry pattern set at Motor City Casino Hotel, including a $1,000 up-front bonus a 4 percent pay increase in each year of the agreement, enhanced 401(k) contributions, and preservation of quality health care. As at MotorCity, workers hired in MGM Grand’s newly expanded permanent gaming facility and hotel will have the right to union representation and will be covered by terms of the new agreement.

The agreement with MGM, negotiated by the Detroit Casino Council, includes some 2,900 workers represented by the UAW, UNITE-HERE, the Operating Engineers and the Teamsters union. The ratification vote took place Monday in Detroit.

“This is the second agreement in as many weeks and our bargaining committee members from all four unions again have done a great job bringing home a solid agreement,” said Settles. All three Detroit casinos, he noted, are in the process of expanding their current facilities, bringing more than $1 billion in investment to downtown Detroit.

Negotiations are ongoing, said Settles, for a new agreement at Greektown Casino.
