Dick Durbin: Durbin Statement On Latest Recall Of Children's Products
October 29, 2007 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) issued the following statement today after a new round of product recalls were announced because of the presence of hazardous amounts of lead paint. The announcement included the second recall of Halloween pails in as many weeks. Also today, the publishers of Consumer Reports recommended that a number of toys, including dishware, jewelry, glue stick caps, vinyl backpacks, children's ceramic tea sets and other toys and items be added to federal recall lists.
"Two days before Halloween, the biggest worry for American kids should be whether they dress up like Dracula or Frankenstein. Instead, tonight, too many families are worried that the candy pails in their kid’s hands, the backpacks on their backs and toys in their living rooms are tainted and unsafe.”
“What's scarier still is that the federal agency responsible for consumer safety has refused to step up to the plate and parents are resorting to testing their own products at home. That's a Halloween trick we can all do without."
