Toronto Blue Jays Claim Two from Cincinnati Reds
10/26/2007 -- The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have claimed LHP MIKE GOSLING and SS PEDRO LOPEZ off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. The Blue Jays have also outrighted RHP JORDAN DeJONG, RHP LEE GRONKIEWICZ and RHP JAMIE VERMILIYEA to Syracuse of the International League (AAA).
GOSLING, 27, appeared in 23 games in relief for the Reds in 2007 and was 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA over 33.0 innings. The 6-2, 210lb. left-hander allowed 42 hits, 18 earned runs, five home runs and 28 walks with 32 strikeouts. In 13 starts for the Louisville Bats of the International League (AAA) last season, Gosling was 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA and a .242 opponents batting average. The Madison, Wisconsin native has appeared in 49 major league games with nine starts posting a 3-4 record with a 4.79 ERA while pitching for Arizona (2004-2005) and Cincinnati (2006-2007).
LOPEZ, 23, hit .178 in 16 games for the Reds last season with two doubles. The 6-1, 160 lb. right-handed hitter combined to hit .284 with 13 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 28 RBI in a combined 75 games in the International League (AAA) between Chattanooga (White Sox) and Louisville (Reds). Lopez, a native of Moca, Dominican Republic, joined Louisville after being claimed off waivers from the White Sox on May 22. Appeared in two games for the White Sox during the 2005 season and hit .286 (207) in two games with two RBI.
