ESPNU to Offer More Than 250 Exclusive Men's, Women's College Basketball Games This Season
- Most Nationally Televised Games of Any Network
- First College Basketball Game Airs Nov. 5
October 22, 2007 -- For the third consecutive season, ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will offer the first nationally televised college basketball games beginning Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. ET with a men’s basketball matchup, Tennessee-Martin vs. Memphis in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer (from Memphis, Tenn.). Its women’s basketball coverage will begin Thursday, Nov. 15, with the ESPNU Invitational, a new doubleheader event from the site of the 2008 Women’s Final Four, the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla., featuring Duke vs. South Florida (7 p.m.) and 2007 National Champion Tennessee vs. Oklahoma (9 p.m.). In all, the network will nationally televise more than 250 exclusive college basketball matchups, the most of any ESPN network.
2007-08 ESPNU College Basketball Schedule Facts
* ESPNU will offer 205 men’s games showcasing top programs, including Georgetown, Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan State, North Carolina and Syracuse, and 46 women’s contests, including Connecticut, Duke, Maryland, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Tennessee and more.
* ESPNU will showcase 44 of last year’s NCAA Tournament men’s teams and 20 of the women’s.
* The men’s schedule will feature compelling matchups, such as Boston College at Michigan (Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.); Duke at Davidson (Dec. 1 at noon); Kansas State at Xavier (Dec. 31 at 7 p.m.); LSU at Texas A &M (Jan. 5 at 8 p.m.); Kansas at Missouri (Jan. 19 at 8 p.m.) and Notre Dame at Connecticut (Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.).
* The ESPN women’s schedule will feature Rutgers at George Washington (Sun., Nov. 18 at 8 p.m.); Ohio State at Maryland (Fri., Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.); Tennessee at DePaul (Wed., Jan. 2 at 9 p.m.) and Baylor at Texas (Wed., Feb. 13 at 9 p.m.).
The network will also feature numerous games from ESPN Inc. franchise programming, including the second annual Student Spirit Week as well as the return of Feast Week, Rivalry Week Presented by Cisco, Holiday Hoops Presented by Kay Jewelers, Judgment Week, O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters and Championship Week Presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Special tournaments and events will include the ESPNU Invitational, O’Reilly ESPNU Puerto Rico Tip-Off and Anaheim Classic, and the return of the Old Spice Classic, 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, EA Sports Maui Invitational, Big Ten/ACC Challenge Presented by Dish Network, Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off, O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic, Great Alaska Shootout and the MasterCard NIT.
As part of its regular-season schedule, the network will also present a bundle of games featuring HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) schools from the MEAC and SWAC, primarily on Mondays, concluding with each of their conference championships.
In addition to game telecasts, ESPNU will televise extensive studio coverage beginning with several 30-minute college conference preview shows for men’s basketball, including the SEC (Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.), Pac-10 (Nov. 6 at 11:30 p.m.), BIG EAST (Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m.), Big 12 (Nov. 7 at 11:30 p.m.), Big Ten (Nov. 8 at 5 p.m.) and the ACC (Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.). On Sun., Nov. 11, ESPNU will air a one-hour preview show that will preview every Division I conference for men’s basketball (at 6:30 p.m.), followed by a 30-minute show covering the women (at 7:30 p.m.).
A men’s basketball version of ESPNU Inside The Polls will air Mondays at 6 p.m. debuting Jan. 7, 2008. The show, hosted by Lowell Galindo with contributions from ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz and a variety of ESPN college basketball analysts, will give viewers the first in-depth look and breakdown of teams ranked in the college basketball polls. Most men’s and women’s game will be supported by the highlights show SportsCenterU during halftime and pre- and post-game segments. For additional coverage, fans can visit ESPNU.com, the online college sports hub, for exclusive online video and audio content, as well as up-to-date news and information.
“ESPNU is a must-have network for any fan of college basketball - with games from perennial powerhouse conferences and programs to the pageantry of Historically Black Colleges and University matchups,” said Burke Magnus, vice president and general manager, ESPNU. “The content offered through the ESPNU brand allows for increased coverage of the sport and a greater variety of programming from numerous conferences, with added support from out talented team of commentators.”
The ESPNU commentator team for game telecasts will display a wide array of talent. The primary play-by-play announcers for men’s basketball include Dave Armstrong, Clay Matvick, Jim Barbar, Quint Kessenich, Steve Physioc, Anthony Calhoun and Michael Reghi. Analysts will be Bob Wenzel, Mike Kelley, and Mark Adams. Most play-by-play for women’s games will be handled by Beth Mowins, who will be joined by analysts Brooke Weisbrod, Krista Blunk and Charlene Curtis.

ESPNU has secured distribution agreements with Charter, Cox, DIRECTV (Channel 609), Echostar’s DISH Network (Channel 148), Insight Communications, Mediacom, Time Warner, Verizon, many smaller affiliates and is close to distribution agreements with others. The 24-hour television network is the key component of the multimedia ESPNU initiative that also delivers college sports content across ESPN’s family of services, such as ESPN The Magazine, ESPN Radio, ESPN360.com, merchandising and more.
