Wednesday, October 17, 2007 -- Former *NSYNC star Lance Bass speaks candidly to Elizabeth Vargas about his life "Out of Sync," the title of his new memoir, and about how for years he lived in secrecy as a gay man before finally coming out. "My first memories are probably when I was five years old. But as long as I remember, I knew that I was gay," he tells Vargas. He says that the band's huge success only made him feel more pressure to keep his sexuality private. "My biggest fear was harming the band... I totally blocked off the gay part of myself, and I walked the walk of a straight guy." The interview airs on "20/20," FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Bass also speaks candidly about Justin Timberlake's decision to leave the band for a solo career. "Never did we think that it was grooming him to become a solo artist so that he wouldn't go back to *NSYNC." Bass says he and the rest of the guys were supportive of Timberlake's solo album, but they always thought he would return to the group, and even says Timberlake kept promising to come back every few months. The group waited for more than a year. "...It meant a huge sacrifice, 'cause I gave up so many opportunities." After more than a year, Bass says Timberlake finally broke the news that he would not be returning to *NSYNC. Bass also discusses his old friend Britney Spears, as well as his future.
And: After only four years of marriage, Ryan Finley was faced with a life-and-death decision when he woke up to find his wife, Jill, unresponsive in bed. Rushed to the hospital, doctors found little brain movement in Jill - she was in a coma. In fact doctors said she was in a category where she had a very small chance of returning to a functional person if she were to wake up. Still so young, Ryan and Jill never had the conversation about this kind of situation. How long should the other be left to live? With help from her parents, Ryan decided Jill would not want to live this way. But only five hours after Jill was taken off life support, a miracle occurred that no one could have predicted. David Muir reports.
Plus: How did DeWayne McKinney go from a life behind bars to a life of luxury in a 10,000 square foot Hawaiian waterfront home as a multi-millionaire? ABC News Correspondent Mary Fulginiti reports on the former gang member who was wrongly convicted of murder and spent 19 years in jail until a stunning confession led to his release. Despite having every reason to be bitter, McKinney refused to blame others and used that forgiveness as a tool to succeed.
Also: John Stossel says "Give Me a Break" to Nobel Prize winner Al Gore for saying "The debate is over" regarding global warming. Roy Spencer is at least one scientist (who happens to have won NASA's Medal for Exceptional Achievement for figuring out how to get temperature data from satellites) who says, "We all agree that it's warmed, I think... The big question is, and the thing that we dispute is, is it because of mankind?"
Finally: From Elvis Presley to Britney Spears, Cher to Scott Baio, why do so many people love comebacks, especially when celebrities are involved? Chris Connelly explores the art of the comeback.
"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel. David Sloan is executive producer.
