Juneau, Alaska – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin today offered her condolences to the family and friends of a Fort Richardson soldier who died Sunday in Iraq. First Lieutenant Thomas M. Martin suffered fatal wounds when insurgents attacked his unit during combat operations in Al Busayifi, Iraq.

Martin, 27, of Ward, Arkansas, was a cavalry scout officer who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 2005 and was assigned to Fort Richardson in June 2006. He was assigned to C Troop, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

“We will never forget the sacrifices made by Lt. Martin and all those serving in uniform,” said Governor Palin. “His loyalty and courage is an inspiration for all Alaskans. Todd and I send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.” Governor Palin will fly a state flag over the Capitol in honor of Lt. Martin. The flag will be sent along with a letter of condolence to his family.
