Colorado Rockies Advance to MLB World Series
16 October 2007 -- The surprising Colorado Rockies will play in Major League Baseball's World Series for the first time in their history, after completing a four-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series.
The Colorado Rockies scored six runs in the fourth inning Monday on the way to beating the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-4. Matt Holliday capped the big inning with a three-run home run.
The Rockies - who were just a strike away from post-season elimination in the final days of the regular season - join the 1976 Cincinnati "Big Red Machine" as the only teams to start a post-season with seven straight wins. Colorado has won 21 of its last 22 games.
The Rockies now have eight days of rest before the start of the World Series in either Boston or Cleveland.
The Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 Monday to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.
Cleveland pitcher Jake Westbrook took a shutout into the seventh inning, allowing just seven hits. Left fielder Kenny Lofton hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Host Cleveland added two more runs in the fifth.
Boston pitcher Tim Wakefield goes against Cleveland's Paul Byrd in Game Four Tuesday, also in Cleveland.
