10/15/2007, BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today received lefthanded pitcher Jay Marshall on a waiver claim from the Oakland A's.

The 24-year-old Marshall has been added to Boston's 40-man roster. To make room, lefthanded pitcher Daniel Haigwood has been designated for assignment.

Marshall spent all of 2007 with the A's, compiling a 1-2 record and 6.43 ERA in 51 relief appearances in his major league debut. He had nine holds and allowed just six of 36 inherited runners to score (16.7%). He earned his first major league win on April 15 versus the Yankees and was 0-for-2 in save opportunities.

He is currently pitching for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League.

Marshall was selected by Oakland in the 2006 Rule V Draft after spending his first four pro seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization. He was chosen by the White Sox in the 25th round of the 2002 MLB 1st Year Player Draft.

Haigwood was acquired from the Texas Rangers in April 2007 and was 3-5, 5.74 in 17 games/16 starts at Double-A Portland in 2007.
