California Governor Schwarzenegger Applauds Groundbreaking for Historic Voter-Approved Infrastructure Project
Work Begins Today to Ease San Diego Traffic Gridlock
10/15/2007 -- Work began today on the first project in California funded by Proposition 1B – which was championed by the Governor and approved last year by voters. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today attended the groundbreaking for the project, which will ease congestion along San Diego’s North Coast Corridor. This construction project will add eight miles of carpool lanes on Interstate 5 and Interstate 805, reconstruct the Lomas Santa Fe interchange and extend Carroll Canyon Road under Interstate 805.
“With 250,000 vehicles passing through here everyday, this section of I-5 is the commuting lifeblood of San Diego and the additional carpool lanes will cut congestion by 20 percent. It’s great to see construction begin because it means more jobs, better movement of people and goods and a brighter future for California,” said Governor Schwarzenegger.
The project will cost $168 million, with more than half of the funding from Caltrans, local TransNet funds and the city of San Diego. $82 million is funded through Proposition 1B.
“What is really spectacular about this project is that it represents exactly the kind of partnership and financial leveraging I envisioned when I laid out my Strategic Growth Plan almost two years ago,” said Governor Schwarzenegger.
In 2006, California voters approved $20 billion in bonds for Strategic Growth Plan projects to improve California’s transportation infrastructure. The bonds will fund repairs, reduce congestion, improve bridge safety, expand public transit and improve port security throughout the state.
Later this week, the Governor is expected to attend other events in the Los Angeles area celebrating other transportation projects – including a traffic light synchronization project and an expansion of one of the nation’s busiest highway interchanges.
