California Governor Schwarzenegger Vetoes "Job-Killing" Legislation
10/12/2007 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today vetoed legislation that would have threatened California’s economic growth.
“Since I took office, California’s business climate has dramatically improved. Unemployment is at its lowest in three decades, and personal income is growing and revenues are the highest in state history.
These bills would have reversed the success we’ve had in putting California back on track,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “Some of these bills would have rolled back the successful reforms we implemented to reduce workers’ comp rates and protect injured workers. These savings have helped our economy thrive – allowing employers to hire more workers, grow their businesses and buy more equipment.”
Specifically, the Governor vetoed:
SB 622 by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) – Employment: misclassification of employees as independent contractors.
SB 936 by Senator Don Perata (D-Oakland) – Workers' compensation: permanent disability schedule.
SB 942 by Senator Carole Migden (D-San Francisco) – Workers' compensation: disability.
AB 435 by Assemblymember Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica) – Wage discrimination.
AB 504 by Assemblymember Sandré Swanson (D-Oakland) – Lockouts.
AB 1636 by Assemblymember Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) – Workers' compensation: supplemental job displacement benefits.
