Weapons Violation Has Snoop Dogg Performing Community Service
12 October 2007, Washington (By Ray McDonald) -- Snoop Dogg will pick up trash and perform park maintenance as part of his sentence for carrying an illegal weapon in an airport last year, said authorities in Santa Ana, CA.
The rapper, born Cordozar Calvin Broadus, will do "everything from raking leaves to painting benches" in order to complete his court-ordered 160 hours of community service, according to his attorney, Donald Etra.
Orange County prosecutor Andre Manssourian said the 35-year-old rapper chose the county park site from a list of probation-approved community service sites and will be supervised by a park ranger. A judge approved the community service on October 10. Officials declined to name the park, citing concerns that fans and media could interfere.
No date was provided for Broadus to start or complete his service, his attorney said. Broadus last month pleaded guilty to felony possession of a dangerous weapon. He was arrested September 27, 2006, after the discovery of a collapsible baton in his computer bag at John Wayne International Airport in Orange County. The rapper claimed the baton was a prop for a video he was shooting in New York.
The felony conviction will be reduced to a misdemeanor if Broadus does not break the law for one year. His sentence included community service, three years' probation, $1,000 in fines and court costs, and a $10,000 donation to a county charity for troubled children.
