10/10/2007 -- Statement of NCTA President & CEO Kyle McSlarrow Regarding the Markup of E-911 and Broadband Mapping Legislation in the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet

“We applaud the subcommittee’s action today to move the ‘911 Modernization and Safety Act of 2007’ to full committee. Cable operators already provide their telephone customers E-911 service and this legislation ensures that cable can continue to offer this important service in the same manner as all competitive voice providers.

We also applaud the subcommittee for approving the ‘Broadband Census of America Act of 2007.’ Cable’s broadband service is currently available to 94 percent of all U.S. households; however, improved data about the availability and speed of all broadband offerings will help accomplish the important goal of further promoting ubiquitous broadband availability for all Americans.”

NCTA is the principal trade association for the U.S. cable industry, representing cable operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation's cable television households and more than 200 cable program networks. The cable industry is the nation’s largest broadband provider of high-speed Internet access after investing more than $110 billion over ten years to build a two-way interactive network with fiber optic technology. Cable companies also provide state-of-the-art digital telephone service to millions of American consumers.
