Chicago White Sox Hire Buddy Bell as Director of Minor League Instruction

10/09/2007, CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have announced the hiring of Buddy Bell as the organization's Director of Minor League Instruction, effective November 1.

Bell, 56, spent the last two-plus seasons as manager of the Kansas City Royals after being hired on May 31, 2005. He also managed the Detroit Tigers (1996-98) and Colorado Rockies (2000-02).

"Buddy brings a tremendous amount of experience to the organization as a player, instructor, coach and manager, and we feel fortunate to add someone of his caliber," said Alan Regier, White Sox director of player development. "He is a first-class individual and will be a big asset to the entire White Sox organization."

Bell spent 18 seasons in the major leagues with Cleveland (1972-78), Texas (1979-85 and 1989), Cincinnati (1985-88) and Houston (1988), batting .279 (2,514-8,995) with 201 home runs and 1,106 RBI in 2,405 games. He was a five-time American League All-Star (1973, 80-82, '84) and won six consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove® awards from 1979-84 as a third baseman.

Bell held the same position with the White Sox from 1991-93 and then spent two seasons (1994-95) as the infield coach for the Indians before beginning his major-league managerial career with the Tigers in 1996.

He is the son of former major-league Gus Bell, and the father of David and Mike Bell, both of whom have played in the majors.
