Connecticut Governor Rell Receives Study on Fuel Cell Technology For New Haven Line Train System

October 9, 2007 -- The state Department of Transportation (DOT) today delivered to Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell and the General Assembly a report by the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) on the feasibility of using fuel cell technology for power generation on the New Haven rail system.

A 2006 statute mandated that the DOT commission the study and report its findings by January 1, 2008. The study will be the subject of a public hearing on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

Governor Rell called the report “a thoughtful and comprehensive examination of the feasibility of utilizing fuel cells to generate power for the New Haven rail line” and said she looks forward to discussing “all energy options with the General Assembly and other stakeholders.”

Governor Rell said the options outlined in the CASE report help support her goals of “greener” power generation across Connecticut.

“As New Haven Line facilities are built, expanded and renovated over time, each will create opportunities for our designers to consider the use of fuel cells for power and heat,” Governor Rell said.

Although all options must be weighed, the report concludes that it makes more economic sense to use fuel cell technology for heat and power within rail yard facilities or train stations, as opposed to actually powering the trains themselves.
