Discover Nevada's Documentary Treasures during Archives Month
Month-Long Celebration of Historic Records Kicks-Off with Documentary Screening
October 4, 2007, Carson City, Nevada -- Governor Jim Gibbons has proclaimed October “Archives Month in Nevada.” To celebrate Nevada’s rich cultural heritage as preserved in documents and records, the Nevada State Library and Archives has planned events all month long for Nevadan’s to discover the state’s documentary treasures.
“Nevada’s archives are a lasting record of what really happened in history and play an important role in the lives of Nevadans,” said Jeff Kintop, Archives Manager.
Archives Month kicks off on Friday, October 12 at noon at the Nevada State Library and Archives with a free screening of the documentary “Where’s the Loot?” followed by an “Ask the Archivist” session.
In this documentary, viewers will follow Alex, an 11-year-old girl who's on the trail of missing coins from the Central Pacific Railroad Train Robbery in 1870 near Verdi, Nevada. In her sleuthing, she's guided by coin collectors, librarians, archivists and historical researchers. She digs for documents at the Nevada Historical Society, Special Collections at the University of Nevada, Reno, and Nevada State Archives, and finds herself at Silver State Coin and historical markers and train tracks, as she unravels the story.
Afterward participants can “Ask the Archivist” anything they want about how to find historic information, where to find information, how to preserve old photographs, documents, civil war letters, family records and more.
“Archives are the historical records that document our lives, our history and our heritage,” said Kintop. “They are proof of who we are, what we own and what really happened in history.”
Archives Month provides an opportunity to show off archival treasures. People can visit them in person or visit them online through the Archives Month Treasure Map on the Nevada State Library and Archives’ web site. Go to www.NevadaCulture.org and click on “Archives Week.”
