Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz Named Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for September

10/01/2007 -- Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has been named the Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for September.

In 26 games last month, the four-time A.L. All-Star batted .396 with 36 hits and 27 RBI in 91 at-bats. He was first in the league with a .824 slugging percentage. Ortiz had 21 extra-base hits, including nine home runs and 12 doubles. The 31-year-old slugger collected 24 walks, and had a .517 on-base percentage with 19 runs scored. "Big Papi" helped lead the Boston Red Sox to a 2007 American League East title, hitting .332 with 35 home runs and 117 RBI for the season. This is his third career Player of the Month Award (previous: September, 2005 & July, 2006).

Others receiving votes were Tampa Bay's Carlos Peña (.318, .795 SLG, 13 HR, 29 RBI) and Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees (.362, .723 SLG, 4 2B, 10 HR, 31 RBI).
