September 28, 2007 -- INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter is assuring Indiana Do Not Call registrants that they do not need to re-register their phone number in order to continue receiving the benefits of the law, unlike the National Do Not Call registry which requires re-registration five years after the initial registration.

“Our Do Not Call law is the strongest in the country and will continue to protect Hoosiers from unwanted telemarketing calls,” Attorney General Steve Carter said. “We knew that citizens were frustrated with unnecessary telemarketing calls. Indiana’s law makes it easy to stop most of those calls through a simple registration process.”

Indiana’s law is the strongest Do Not Call law in the country because it doesn’t allow an existing business relationship exception. The law was established in 2001 and currently benefits more than 3.5 million people. The attorney general’s office has entered into agreements with 218 companies for alleged violations of the law.

The attorney general’s office reminds people that registration is free and the state will not ask for any personal financial information.

“We made it a priority to make Indiana’s Do Not Call list one of the toughest and most user-friendly in the nation,” Carter added. “By maintaining current numbers and not requiring everyone to re-register every few years, Indiana’s law works better for its citizens.”

Registration is available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week at www.attorneygeneral.IN.gov or by calling 1-888-834-9969.

The next deadline to register new phone numbers on Indiana’s Do Not Call list is October 1, 2007.
