September 28, 2007 -- TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum today issued the following statement regarding a new management program for the Wekiva River:

“I am pleased that the community has made a commitment to protect the Wekiva River, the springs from the river and the surrounding river basin. This is one of our state’s most beautiful natural resources and I look forward to the thoughtful consideration this workshop will certainly develop.”

While in Congress, Bill McCollum sponsored House Bill 2773 to amend the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, designating the Wekiva River and its tributaries of Rock Springs Run and Black Water Creek in the State of Florida as components of the national wild and scenic rivers system. The bill became law in 2000.

A workshop for the Wekiva Wild & Scenic River Community was held this week to develop the management plan for the Wekiva River. The community workshop was designed to encourage residents and community leaders to learn about the proposed management plan and participate in the efforts to continue environmental stewardship and protection of the Wekiva River.
