DNC Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Hear Indiana Voter ID Case
September 25, 2007 -- Washington, DC - Democratic National Committee Voting Rights Institute Chair Donna Brazile issued the following statement in response to today's decision by the Supreme Court to hear the Indiana voter ID case:
"The Supreme Court will now have the opportunity to right a wrong perpetrated by the GOP as a broader effort to make it harder for some Americans to vote. These unjust and highly restrictive voter ID laws continue to crop up around the country as part of a reprehensible partisan scheme to suppress voter turnout and dilute the voter participation of people of color, seniors, young people, people with disabilities, low-income citizens, people who live in urban and rural areas, and others who lack access to a government issued photo ID.
"The Indiana voter ID law should be overturned and found unconstitutional once and for all. A strong ruling will discourage other states from trying to apply what can only be described as a modern day poll tax which disenfranchises legally eligible voters. As Democrats, we believe that we should make it easier, not harder for all Americans to exercise their fundamental right to vote."
