Dick Durbin Statement On The Recall Of 1 Million Cribs
September 21, 2007 -- [Washington, D.C.] - United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) issued the following statement today, after the a recall of 1 million Simplicity cribs. The recall was announced after a dozens of children were injured and two killed, from an improperly installed piece of hardware.
"When parents put their children to bed at night, they trust that the crib they're using will be the safest place for them, outside of their arms. When you look at the series of recalls of children's products over the last few months, one thing becomes clear; greater steps need to be taken to test and certify the safety of products designed for children."
"I've introduced a bill, along with Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), that would require ALL children's products be tested and certified safe by third party testing facilities. In addition, I'm working with my Senate colleagues to strengthen the resources and authority of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to ensure that our nation's consumer watchdog is up to the task of protecting us all."
"I urge parents to please check your cribs against information found on the CPSC website. More info can be found at www.cpsc.gov."
