Missouri Governor Blunt Announces Renewed Council on Aging to Better Assist Missouri Seniors
September 17, 2007 -- LAKE OZARK – During a keynote address at the Fourth Annual Show-Me Summit on Aging and Health Missouri Governor Matt Blunt issued an executive order that will renew the mission of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging to improve services for Missouri’s aging population.
“Missourians can be proud of the efforts we are making to secure a better life for Missourians at every stage of their lives,” Blunt said. “We are making our state a better place for seniors to ensure that their retirement years are enjoyable and secure.”
The executive order the governor signed today rejuvenates the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging. The council will now be comprised of twelve members, more than half of which must be 60 years of age or older. The council will be charged with advising the governor on what actions and policies state government can pursue to increase the independence and dignity of Missouri seniors.
Last month the governor announced a new program available to Missouri residents between the ages of 45-65 to promote awareness of long-term care needs. The “Own Your Future” Long-Term Care Public Awareness Campaign is designed to help Missourians take an active role in planning ahead for their future long-term care needs.
Earlier this year, Blunt signed legislation that will help Missourians keep more of their hard-earned money and encourage more people to plan for their future. The new law allows Missourians to deduct 100 percent of the cost of their long-term care insurance. Previously, Missourians were only able to deduct 50 percent of the cost.
Gov. Blunt also signed legislation this year that provides tax relief to tens of thousands of Missouri seniors by phasing in a state income tax exemption on Social Security benefits over six years. The legislation also provides relief for teachers, firefighters, police officers, military personnel, federal employees and railroad workers.
