September 12, 2007 -- Disney’s “High School Musical 2” soundtrack rewrites chart history yet again with four consecutive weeks at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 album chart, scanning 165,000 units for the week ending 9/9/07. It is the first album to achieve this milestone since 2005 (50 Cent’s “The Massacre”). Year to date, the double-Platinum soundtrack is already ranked the No. 6 best-selling album of 2007, scanning a total of 1,357,000 units since its release.
The “High School Musical 2” soundtrack has also maintained the No. 1 position on two other Billboard charts -- Top Soundtrack Albums and Top Kid Audio -- for the same four-week period.
The CD has certified Platinum in the U.S. and Canada and certified Gold in Ireland, the UK, Argentina, Central America, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico and New Zealand.
Last year the soundtrack to the first “High School Musical” Disney Channel Original Movie spent two non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, and was the first television movie soundtrack to reach the top spot. The quadruple-platinum first soundtrack was the best-selling album of 2006 according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD has sold seven million copies worldwide, and was ranked the #1 top selling album of 2006 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI represents the recording industry worldwide.)
The double-Platinum certified “Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cyrus” ( Walt Disney Records/ Hollywood Records) release also achieved a milestone this week: The double disc set has spent 11 consecutive weeks in the Top 5 on The Billboard 200, tying with Mary J. Blige’s 2005 release “The Breakthrough.” “Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cyrus” is the only double album in 30+ years to accomplish this feat since Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life” in 1976. “Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cyrus” is #3 on The Billboard 200 chart, scanning 1,250,000 units to date.
The double CD marked the solo recording debut of 14-year-old singer/songwriter Miley Cyrus, star of Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana,” and is the second soundtrack from the hit series for kids, tweens and families. Last fall the series’ first soundtrack, “Hannah Montana,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200, the first ever TV soundtrack to do so. It is now triple-Platinum with over 3 million units sold worldwide. Miley Cyrus is youngest ever recording artist with two #1 albums in less than a year.
