Houston Astros Acquire Dennis Sarfate from Milwaukee Brewers

09/11/2007, HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Dennis Sarfate from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations. To make room for Sarfate on the 40-man roster, the club has designated right-handed pitcher Miguel Asencio for assignment. The announcements were made by Interim General Manager Tal Smith.

Dennis Sarfate, 26, was 2-7 with four saves and a 4.52 ERA (31ER/61.2IP) in 45 games (one start) for Triple A Nashville in 2007. He struck out 68 hitters while walking 47 and allowing 61 hits. Sarfate pitched in eight Major League games for the Brewers in 2006, posting no decisions and a 4.32 ERA (4ER/8.1IP) and striking out 11 hitters in 8.1 innings.

Dennis Sarfate was a ninth-round selection in the June 2001 draft by Milwaukee. He is expected to report to Houston and be in uniform tomorrow.

The 26-year-old Asencio was 1-3 with a 7.43 ERA (33ER/40IP) and three saves in 28 games for Triple A Round Rock in 2007. He also pitched in 10 games (9 starts) for Double A Corpus Christi, finishing 1-3 with a 4.70 ERA (23ER/44IP). Asencio was acquired by Houston from Colorado on Dec. 12, 2006 along with right-handed pitcher Jason Jennings in exchange for right-handed pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh and outfielder Willy Taveras.
