Becomes First GOP Candidate to Sign Organization’s Divided We Fail Pledge

September 07, 2007, Boston, MA – Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee today addressed 1,200 members of the AARP, becoming the first GOP presidential candidate to sign the organization’s ‘Divided We Fail pledge.’

“It is an honor to be the first Republican presidential candidate to sign the organization’s Divided We Fail pledge,” said Huckabee. “AARP and its members have it right – the issues facing our nation are too complex, too far reaching and too critical to fall prey to partisan bickering or generational differences.”

Huckabee spoke at the AARP’s Annual National Member event, taking place in Boston on
Sept. 7 and Sept. 8. The former governor was also among the first to announce his decision to participate in the televised Republican Presidential Candidates’ Forum, co-sponsored by AARP and IA public television, on Oct. 25 in Sioux City, Iowa. The ninety-minute, nationally-televised forum will focus solely on the top domestic issues of health and financial security.

“I’m convinced we can balance the needs of older Americans and our growing number of Baby Boomers, while ensuring that all generations enjoy the financial security that comes from a strong, safe and economically vibrant country. I’m pleased to have an opportunity to share my thoughts on the issues that I believe are important not only to AARP members, but all Americans,” Huckabee said.

Huckabee addressed the AARP Expo following a four-day tour of New Hampshire which included participation in the New Hampshire Republican Presidential debate on Wednesday evening. The former governor heads to Georgia this weekend for two days of campaign-related activities.
