Roger Federer Wins Fourth US Open in a Row

09 September 2007 -- World number one tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has become the first man since American Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win the U.S. Open championship four times in a row.

Roger Federer won a hard-fought final Sunday over third seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. In each of the first two sets, Djokovic led 6-5, but Roger Federer fought off five set points in the first set and two in the second - taking both sets to tiebreakers, where he prevailed.

The Swiss star now has 12 major titles, just two short of American Pete Sampras's career record of 14.

Earlier Sunday, Nathalie Dechy of France and Dinara Safina of Russia won the women's doubles title. In their first tournament paired together, the seventh-seeded duo beat the fifth-seeded Taiwanese pair of Chan Yung-jan and Chuang Chia-jung in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Last year Dechy won the doubles title with another Russian, Vera Zvonareva.

World number-one Justine Henin of Belgium won the women's singles title Saturday night, overpowering Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-1, 6-3.
