September 5, 2007 -- Jefferson City, Mo. — Hundreds of thousands of toys made in China for major U.S. toy companies Mattel Inc. and Fisher-Price Inc. have been voluntarily recalled by the companies and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission because surface paint on the toys contain excessive levels of lead.

About 675,000 Barbie accessories imported by Mattel and approximately 90,000 Geo Trax Locomotive Toys and 8,900 Bongo Band Toys imported by Fisher-Price are involved in the recalls. Links to detailed information about the toys being recalled may be found on the recall clearinghouse page of Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon’s Web site, ago.mo.gov.

Parents should remove any of the recalled toys from children and contact Mattel or Fisher-Price to obtain a free replacement toy. They can contact both companies through a toll-free hotline at (888) 496-8330 or go online to www.mattel.com/safety.

The Missouri Attorney General’s online clearinghouse covers items recalled by several different federal agencies, including toys, medicine, cars, food and other categories.
