Howard Dean: Republicans Have A Long Way to Go Before They've Cleaned Up the Culture of Corruption

September 4, 2007 -- Washington, DC - Echoing comments made this morning, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement regarding the Republican Culture of Corruption. From the unconscionable cover-up of Mark Foley's actions that put our children in harms way, to Bob Ney and Duke Cunningham's abuses of office for personal gain, to the allegations against Tom DeLay involving a lobbying scandal that forced him to resign, to Jack Abramoff's illegal lobbying that landed him in jail, to a corruption investigation involving Ted Stevens, to Alberto Gonzales possibly misleading Congress about the US attorneys scandal, to the guilty plea of Larry Craig, to David Vitter's unethical behavior for which he has yet to be held accountable, Republicans have put what's best for their party ahead of what's best for the country.
"For years, Republicans have promoted a Culture of Corruption that has disgraced our country, and recent events show they have a long way to go before they've cleaned up their act. While Republicans in Washington have campaigned on one set of values, they have lived by another. The American people expect and deserve better.
"It is time they stop sweeping this type of behavior under the rug and hold David Vitter accountable for apparently setting up illegal activity in the midst of conducting Congressional business. He should come clean to the American people.
"Voters rejected this Republican brand of leadership in 2006, and they will reject it again in 2008."
