Power restoration underway at LLNL
LIVERMORE, Calif. – Power restoration is now underway at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory after a small transformer failure resulted in a loss of power to approximately 107 laboratory facilities. LLNL crews began restoring power at approximately 12 noon and full restoration is expected by the end of today. Because the power outage is lasting longer than three hours, an operational emergency not requiring further classification was officially declared, as per standard procedure. The partial power outage began at 7:30 a.m. this morning. The operational emergency was declared at 10:10 a.m.
When the outage occurred, backup generators immediately supplied power to 22 facilities — including the Lab’s plutonium facility. All redundant safety and security systems were immediately activated. There were no injuries as a result of the transformer failure and subsequent outage. Laboratory operations not affected by the outage proceeded as normal.
Due to the expected high temperatures predicted for Livermore Valley today and the length of time it may take to restore power, employees in the affected buildings were released from work.
