Transformer Failure Causes Partical Power Outage At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

LIVERMORE, Calif. – An operational emergency not requiring further classification has been declared at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) due to a partial power outage that occurred at 7:30 a.m. this morning. The outage was a result of a small transformer failure.

Approximately 107 buildings and trailers on the west side of the lab have been affected in the outage. Backup generators immediately supplied power to 22 facilities — including the Lab's Superblock. All redundant safety and security systems were immediately activated. There were no injuries as a result of the transformer failure and subsequent outage and laboratory operations not affected by the outage are proceeding as normal.

Due to the expected high temperatures predicted for Livermore Valley today and the length of time it may take to restore power, employees in the affected buildings have been released from work. Laboratory operational crews are working on the outage and expect to have power completely restored by the end of the day.

The declaration of an "operational emergency" is standard procedure for any event lasting more than three hours in duration.
