MLB.com Sets New Online Baseball Ticketing Mark for Seventh Straight Year
Record-setting online mark established as 38 percent of all tickets are sold at MLB.com
08/28/2007, NEW YORK -- MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, announced today that it has established a new online ticketing record for the seventh consecutive year as, to date in 2007, more than 24 million tickets have been sold on behalf of the League's 30 clubs at MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball and the individual club sites. The current total tickets sold not only represents a new annual mark for the company, but also surpasses the total number of tickets sold online for the entire 2006 season.
Online ticketing at MLB.com provides fans with a variety of options to ensure the ordering experience is convenient and easy, including a view of the field from any section of the majority of Major League ballparks. To date in 2007, more than 50 percent of all tickets sold online utilize the print-at-home ticket service offered by all 30 Major League clubs as a means for eliminating offline delivery or ballpark will-call window wait times.
In 2007, MLB.com introduced the delivery of tickets to mobile devices. This service, currently being used by five clubs, allows fans to have their tickets delivered straight to a designated mobile phone via a standard text message and have the image on the phone scanned at the gate. The ticket on the phone has a unique barcode and all of the relevant game information of a paper ticket, including opponent, time, section, row and seat. Fans receive a receipt to use as a seat identifier after the mobile ticket has been successfully scanned.
As the baseball season enters its stretch run with 18 teams within seven games of a postseason berth, Major League Baseball remains on pace to establish a new attendance record for the fourth consecutive year. Total attendance for the 30 Major League clubs has surpassed 64 million and is more than 4 percent ahead of the total through the same date of last year's season total of 76,042,787.
