August 27, 2007 -- JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Governor Matt Blunt today announced that Missouri is again on track to set the record for exports, reflecting the positive impact the governor’s policies are having on jobs and the economy. The state’s exports were up by 14 percent compared to the same period in record-breaking 2006, according to the World Institute for Economic Research (WISER). Gov. Blunt said the new report shows that the pro-jobs, pro-growth initiatives he has enacted are helping create jobs and economic opportunities for Missourians.

“This report confirms that Missouri businesses are succeeding in the global economy,” Blunt said. “It is a tribute to Missouri’s workers and families that we have set new export records every year since 2005. I am pleased that our pro-jobs, pro-growth initiatives are helping our innovative employers and entrepreneurs create jobs and new opportunities. Missourians have responded to our pro-jobs, pro-growth initiatives by creating nearly 85,000 jobs since January 2005. Establishing business relationships with international partners is critical to attracting good, family supporting jobs to Missouri.”

Through the end of June 2007, exports by Missouri companies totaled $6.9 billion, compared to $6.0 billion after the second quarter of 2006. This is particularly good news for Missouri businesses, in light of Missouri setting a record for exports in 2006 with $12.8 billion in total global sales. The second quarter figures put the state on track to top that mark this year.

Twelve Missouri product categories each topped $100 million in export sales through the second quarter of 2007, including transportation equipment ($2.6 billion), chemicals ($1.1 billion), machinery ($573 million), food and kindred products ($339 million), electrical equipment ($328 million), agricultural products ($268 million), computer and electronic products ($239 million), fabricated metal products ($216 million), minerals and ores ($187 million), primary metal manufacturing ($152 million), waste and scrap ($131 million), and plastics and rubber products ($117 million).

As governor, Blunt has made helping Missouri businesses thrive in the global economy a priority by personally meeting with business and government leaders in other nations touting Missouri’s products and services. Blunt has also made Missouri a more hospitable place for job creators by securing real litigation and workers’ compensation reforms and the creation of his Quality Jobs program to help stimulate economic growth.
