Pennsylvania Governor Rendell Pledges Continued Improvement For Chester-Upland
August 24, 2007 -- CHESTER – Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell said today the Chester-Upland School District can expect to see great improvements in the coming school year, thanks to increased funding, strengthened leadership and heightened community involvement.
“At this time two years ago, I stood here and promised that every child in the Chester-Upland School District would receive the quality education they deserve. I am proud to say that we are meeting that goal,” said Governor Rendell. “The school district has made great strides but today we are going to take a leap in ensuring success for every student.”
Chester-Upland School District will receive unprecedented support this school year. The state budget provides $9.4 million in new state funding, which includes funding to provide 80 students with quality pre-kindergarten education. Additionally, the school will receive funding for the “Dual Enrollment” program, to enable students to enroll in college courses, and for “Project 720,” which will provide additional guidance counselors. The school district was also selected to participate in the Governor’s “Classroom for the Future” initiative, which will put laptops on every high school student’s desks.
“Leadership within a district plays a key role in student success and the education empowerment board has been able to pave a road to that goal,” Governor Rendell said. “This new leadership has adopted an effective budget, expanded extracurricular activities, provided teacher training and, overall, has made great progress.”
This year will also produce new learning environments for the Chester-Upland students.
Improvements will be made on the infrastructure of the school buildings that will help enhance the student’s surroundings so that they are able to focus on their education. Eight local labor unions have donated their time and will be working diligently over the next few weeks to complete the project for the start of the new school year. The workers will install lighting fixtures, fix ceilings, paint, install mirrors, and other essential improvements.
“Chester-Upland has made great advancements, but much work remains. We must continue to strive for excellence to guarantee that our students reach a high level of achievement. I know that with the hard work of the education empowerment board, the district and the community, Chester-Upland can continue to improve their financial and academic standings,” the Governor said.
