Nancy Pelosi: "Once Again, President Bush Is Trying to Throw America's Children Off Health Insurance Rolls"
August 21, 2007 -- Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today opposing the new conditions the Bush Administration has imposed on the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which will make it more difficult for states to extend health coverage to children in middle-income families:
"While Republicans always talk about the importance of state flexibility and letting states make decisions, their actions are quite the opposite. Once again, President Bush is trying to throw America's children off our nation's health insurance rolls.
"SCHIP has provided millions of children with quality health insurance, and has earned broad bipartisan support. Yet now the Bush Administration is imposing restrictions that will cause more children to be uninsured.
"In Congress, we are working to do the opposite - to expand health insurance for America's children and ensure they have the opportunity for a bright future. We encourage the President to join us in these efforts."
