Utah Governor Huntsman Requests Additional Mines be Inspected

Salt Lake City - Utah Governor Jon Huntsman asked the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration today to conduct immediate inspections of two additional mines owned by Murray Energy Corporation in Carbon County.

The request comes as the Governor prepares to appoint an independent investigation committee to make recommendations for State actions to ensure safety in Utah mines.

"These additional inspections are only the beginning of a larger investigation that needs to be conducted in Utah's deep mines to secure safety for our miners," Governor Huntsman said. "We must do all we can, at every level, to be prepared for a catastrophe like this one. This is the least we can do to ensure that the lives lost have not been in vain."

The details of the additional inspections are being determined by MSHA.
