Bergen County, New Jersey Man Indicted on First-degree Drug Charge
Charged With Possession of Kilogram of Cocaine
August 21, 2007 -- TRENTON - New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram and Criminal Justice Director Gregory A. Paw announced that a Bergen County man was indicted today by a state grand jury for allegedly possessing a kilogram of cocaine which he intended to distribute.
According to Director Paw, Juan Carlos Barroso, 34, of Cliffside Park, was charged in a two-count indictment with first-degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and third-degree possession of cocaine.
The charges resulted from an investigation by the New Jersey State Police. The indictment alleges that State Police detectives found a kilogram of cocaine on top of a bed in Barroso’s apartment at 28 Grant Street in Cliffside Park on Nov. 22, 2004, after Barroso gave the detectives permission to enter the apartment to interview him.
The first-degree charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a criminal fine of $500,000, while the third-degree charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $35,000 fine.
The indictment is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The indictment was handed up to Superior Court Judge Neil H. Shuster in Mercer County, who assigned the case to Bergen County.
Deputy Attorney General Daniel I. Bornstein presented the case to the state grand jury.
