August 16, 2007 -- SEDALIA - Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, First Lady Melanie Blunt and their son William Branch joined with Missourians in celebrating Missouri agriculture at the Missouri State Fair.

“I am honored to share in the celebration of Missouri agriculture,” Blunt said. “Agriculture is the bedrock of our economy and cultural heritage. My administration has a strong record of supporting Missouri farm families, and I will continue to advocate for policies that will help enhance Missouri agriculture.”

This morning the governor thanked representatives of Missouri agriculture for helping to renew the state’s commitment to agriculture during his speech at the annual Governor’s Ham Breakfast. During his busy day at the fair, the governor will visit the many agriculture commodities that are being showcased and join the First Lady and Branch in enjoying the many exhibits on the fairgrounds. Branch particularly enjoys the animal petting area.

Gov. Blunt has been a leader for Missouri agriculture during his two and a half years as governor. He has advocated for value added programs such as the Missouri Branded Beef Initiative, Quality Systems Assessment and plant based renewable fuel production.

Blunt was the first governor to recommend and secure full funding for both the Ethanol and Biodiesel Producer Incentive Funds. He has also worked to secure all back payments due to farmers from the ethanol producer fund in prior years. His establishment of a 10 percent ethanol standard will spur growth in rural communities, lessen Missouri’s dependence on foreign energy sources and improve air quality.

Blunt has worked to highlight the value of Missouri-made beef to ensure Missouri farmers are compensated for the high quality of their beef. Under Blunt’s leadership, Missouri was the first state in the nation to be certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a beef quality assurance program.
