Alaska State Flags Lowered for Former Legislator

August 15, 2007, Juneau, Alaska – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin today ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor and memory of former Representative Bennie Leonard of Anchorage. Leonard died Monday at Alaska Regional Hospital. He was 91.

Elected in November 1960, Leonard served in the 2nd and 3rd Alaska State Legislatures. He also served more than three terms on the Anchorage City Council.

“Representative Leonard was a man of character and principle who worked tirelessly for his constituents,” said Governor Palin. “His commitment and dedication to public service is to be admired. Todd and I offer our prayers and condolences to his family and friends.”

Governor Palin has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, August 17, 2007. Flags will be raised to full-staff the following day.
