Oregon Conservation Leader Joins National Wildlife Federation
"Global warming is the biggest threat Oregon’s wildlife will face in my lifetime"
PORTLAND, OR (August 14) – Nic Callero, an Oregon native, avid outdoorsman, and a leader in Oregon’s wildlife community, has joined the National Wildlife Federation as Oregon outreach consultant. Callero will lead an effort to mobilize Oregon hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts in a call to action against global warming.
“I’ve been fishing Oregon’s rivers my whole life, and from the small Pacific coastal creeks to the larger main stem rivers, I’ve seen how vulnerable our waterways are to overdevelopment, over fishing, and pollution,” said Callero. “But global warming is the biggest threat Oregon’s wilderness will face in my lifetime. It’s acting as an accelerant on all these other problems we have fought so hard fix.”
“As an angler, I’ve seen how powerful our voice can be. We have worked extremely hard these past years to restore our salmon and steelhead runs,” continued Callero. “We need to continue this work, using our political voice to pressure our elected officials to require a cut in carbon emissions by two percent annually, putting us on a path to reduce emissions 80 percent by 2050, the amount scientists tell us is needed to avoid the worst effects of global warming. A portion of any revenue generated must go to protecting wildlife and critical ecosystems from the impacts of global warming.”
Callero will coordinate efforts as dozens of hunters and anglers across Oregon give the National Wildlife Federation’s presentation on global warming to groups of outdoors enthusiasts in their communities.
The National Wildlife Federation’s Hunter and Angler Pledge to Confront Climate Change asks outdoor enthusiasts to make their voices heard and talk about their concerns – both with their friends and with their elected officials.
