Phil Rizzuto: Statement By New York Governor Eliot Spitzer Regarding The Passing Of Phil Rizzuto
August 14, 2007 -- "Today New York has lost one of its most celebrated sons, one of its best ballplayers, and one of its finest citizens.
Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto, “The Scooter,” epitomized the combination of tenacity and talent that defined the New York Yankees dynasty of the early 1950s.
For fans of a younger generation, he was the voice of the Yankees, having sat in the broadcast booth for forty years following his retirement in 1956.
Rizzuto’s cross-generational appeal helped to make him one of the most beloved Yankees of all time. His integrity, compassion, and wit will be missed by all who knew him, and many who did not. His death at 89 years old saddens us all. "
