Connecticut Governor Rell: 13,000 Enroll During First Month of Electric Energy Consumption Savings Program

August 14, 2007 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that more than 13,000 Connecticut utility customers have enrolled in the 2007 Summer Saver Rewards Program during the program’s first month. The Governor said that 10,011 Connecticut Light & Power customers and 3,102 United Illuminating customers have enrolled in the Rewards program and urged residents and businesses to continue to enroll.

Under the Summer Saver Rewards Program, electric utility consumers whose electric energy consumption between July 1 and September 30, 2007 is at least 10 percent less than what the same customer used during that period in 2006, will receive a 10 percent credit for the generation portion of their bills. Customers may also be able to earn credits of 15 percent or 20 percent. The generation line item represents more than two-thirds of a typical customer’s bill.

“These enrollment numbers are encouraging,” Governor Rell said. “The program provides customers with incentives to save, and clearly that is a message that consumers appreciate. We expect enrollment to increase in the next few weeks with a joint direct mailer going out to all CL&P and UI customers. All customers are eligible to receive the credits. Customers of both UI and CL&P should call 1-877-WISE USE [1-877-947-3873] to enroll or receive information about the program.”

Governor Rell said consumers can reduce their electric consumption by closing blinds/curtains on the south-facing side of the house during the day, turning air conditioning temperatures up by two degrees, not running air conditioning units when no one is home, turning off unused appliances and lighting, switching to energy-saving light bulbs and unplugging unused electronic equipment (such as cell phone chargers) when not in use.

Business customers can turn off any unused equipment and also raise the temperature on air conditioning, as well as switch to energy efficient lighting. Anyone thinking of purchasing an appliance for home or business should consider replacing older appliances with energy-efficient models. More information can be found at www.ctenergyinfo.com .

Last month, Governor Rell announced the launch of a new, statewide marketing effort and advertising campaign that will help residents save on their energy bills and make a positive contribution to the environment: OneThing. OneThing builds on the enormous impact that could be achieved if every person in Connecticut did one thing, every day, to help conserve all forms of energy – from electricity and gasoline to natural gas and renewable resources. A comprehensive web site, www.onethingct.com , provides visitors with energy saving tips, rebate, tax and product information and creative, practical conservation ideas. In addition, the website serves as a place for individuals and organizations to formally record their commitments to do OneThing.
