MLB: Orioles Beat Slumping Red Sox

13 August 2007 -- The Baltimore Orioles rallied in the late innings Sunday to beat the slumping Boston Red Sox in a key Major League Baseball matchup.

Former Boston star Kevin Millar hit a game-ending three-run home run in the ninth to give the Orioles a 6-3 win. Miguel Tejada tied the game with a homer in the eighth inning.

Boston has lost four of its last six games, and now leads the American League East division by just four games ahead of the New York Yankees.

The Yankees completed a six-game season sweep of Cleveland Sunday with a 5-3 victory, knocking the Indians from the Central division lead.

The Detroit Tigers took over that spot, beating the Oakland Athletics, 11-6. Magglio Ordonez hit two home runs in the Tigers' eight-run second inning.

The Seattle Mariners shut down the Chicago White Sox, 6-0, with pitcher Jeff Weaver earning the win. Jeff's younger brother, Jared Weaver, earned the victory Sunday for the Los Angeles Angels, who tripped up the Minnesota Twins, 6-2. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-1. And the Texas Rangers routed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 9-1.

In the National League, San Diego's Brian Giles hit two home runs for the second consecutive day, leading the Padres to a 10-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The Houston Astros rallied with four runs in the eighth inning to get by the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-4. The New York Mets downed the Florida Marlins, 10-4. The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves, 5-3.

The National League East division last-place Washington Nationals rallied from a five-run deficit to edge the West division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-6. The Colorado Rockies doubled the Chicago Cubs, 6-3. The St. Louis Cardinals crushed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-2. And the Pittsburgh Pirates thumped the San Francisco Giants, 5-0.

Two major league records were tied Sunday. Detroit's Placido Polanco tied a record by playing his 143rd consecutive game without an error at second base.

And Chicago closing relief pitcher Bobby Jenks tied a record of 41 straight batters retired.
