August 13, 2007 -- Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell has ordered all U.S. and State of Connecticut flags to be lowered from dawn until dusk on Tuesday, August 14 in honor of Sgt. 1st Class John T. Gallagher, of Hamden.

Sgt. Gallagher, 24, was part of a crew of a UH-1D helicopter that was shot down while on patrol in Savannakhet Province, Laos on January 5, 1968.

The helicopter was approaching a landing zone when it was struck by ground fire. There were no survivors, but attempts to reach the site over the next several days were repelled by enemy fire.

In 1995, investigations led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command located the crash site. The remains and other evidence were recovered during three excavations between 2002-2006. Investigators used dental records and other evidence to help identify the remains, and Sgt. Gallagher's remains were individually identified.

A group funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, August 14 at Arlington National Cemetery.

“State residents’ thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Gallagher’s family and friends as we lower our flags in his honor,” Governor Rell said. “His service, his bravery and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
