08/09/2007, SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants have traded infielder/outfielder Mark Sweeney to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named later, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

Mark Sweeney, who ranks 2nd in Major League history with 155 pinch hits, leads all big league pinch-hitters in 2007 with 16 hits, 10 walks and six doubles off the bench. The 37-year-old was batting .327 (16-for-49) as a pinch-hitter this year, while his 16 pinch safeties are tied for the third highest single-season total in San Francisco history.

The 13-year Major League veteran leads all active players in pinch hits, pinch home runs (15 - tied seventh all-time) and pinch RBI (96 - fifth all-time), while logging a career .270 average (155-for-575) in that role.

Originally signed to a two-year contract prior to the 2006 season, Sweeney batted .252 (88-for-349) with 23 doubles, seven home runs and 47 RBI in 190 games for the Giants. He is hitting .256 (23-for-90) with eight doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI in 76 contests in 2007, while making just 10 starts.

Today's trade is the first between the Giants and Dodgers in nearly 22 years, since San Francisco acquired outfielder Candy Maldonado in exchange for catcher Alex Trevino on December 11, 1985.
