Sam Brownback: ABC News Confirms New Romney Abortion Flip
He rejects federalist approach to abortion that he supported in February
August 7, 2007 -- DES MOINES – In a Monday interview on ABC's Good Morning America, Mitt Romney backed away from a federalist approach to abortion that he supported as recently as February 2007.
In contrast to earlier statements opposing a "one-size fits all approach," Romney now says that he supports a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution that would protect the unborn child under the 14th Amendment in all 50 states.
"Mitt Romney has flip-flopped so much on the issue of abortion that he has absolutely no idea of where he really stands," said Rob Wasinger, national campaign manager of Brownback for President. "In just six months, Romney once again flipped on the issue of abortion. It is increasingly apparent that Romney's views on abortion have nothing to do with protecting the unborn, but have everything to do with protecting his political career."
February 9, 2007: Romney states his support for a federalist approach to abortion policy. When asked if he would support a constitutional amendment banning abortion, he said, "What I've indicated is that I am pro-life, and that my hope is that the Supreme Court will give to the states over time or give to the states soon or give to the states their own ability to make their own decisions with regard to their own abortion law."

February 9, 2007: Romney says he opposes a "one-size fits all approach" and "single federal rule" that would determine abortion policy. "My view is not to impose a single federal rule on the entire nation--a one-size-fits-all approach--but instead allow states to make their own decisions in this regard."

February 18, 2007: Romney again states his support for a federalist approach to abortion on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

August 5, 2007: The Brownback for President campaign says that, "Mitt Romney has yet to clearly state whether he supports or opposes the Human Life Amendment, which would protect the unborn child in all 50 states and which is part of the official platform of the Republican Party."

August 6, 2007: On national television, Romney contradicts past statements by indicating his support for the Human Life Amendment to the Constitution:
Host: Senator Brownback's campaign says you're still being evasive on abortion. They look at the 2004 platform which says we support a Human Life Amendment and endorse legislation to make sure the 14th Amendment applies to unborn children. Do you support that part of the Republican platform?
Romney: I do support that part of the Republican platform and I'm pro-life.

"How do we know that Romney wouldn't flip on the issues that are the very heart and soul of our party just to get elected?" said Wasinger. "He's flipped on abortion, gays in the Boy Scouts, taxes and Ronald Reagan. If you vote for Romney, how do you know what you'll get?"
